Hi All - Hope everyone is enjoying the shift into Spring! My new move to Vancouver has been great and when the weather is good, probably not a more beautiful city. Moving to Canada was pretty big for me and as I found out to my disappointment, Dexcom was not available in Canada! In my opinion, outside of insulin, there is not a better way to control my blood sugar levels than the Dexcom G4, so I have been using the 3 month supply I got prior to moving sparingly. THINGS ARE CHANGING AS WE SPEAK! I wanted to provide some exciting news I just read on Dexcom's Q1 earnings call yesterday (<-click link to read). Having used the new Dexcom G4, I am a firm believer in the company, so have purchased shares of the company. I enjoy keeping track on how they are doing from a shareholder perspective and as a customer. Exciting NEWS is that they have received approval from Health Canada, so I should be able to start getting coverage for the sensors in third quarter of this year! Super stoked.
From Earnings call - "On the international front, we (Dexcom) are pleased to report that we have received approval from Health Canada to begin marketing the G4 system in Canada. Our initial approval is for adults only. However, we expect to file supplements seeking pediatric approval later this quarter. Our distributor in Canada expects to commence a limited launch at the beginning of Q3 with the full launch commencing before the end of Q3." Also, some great news for parents of diabetic children, they are up to some cool stuff for cloud based, mobile and remote monitoring ability. Read below! From Earnings call - "Many of our future generation products, particularly our mobile and cloud-based products will be very applicable to this market segment. In particular, we continue to make considerable progress on the DexCom share system, a remote monitoring system developed to address the unique challenges faced by caregivers in assisting people with type 1 diabetes. As a reminder, the DexCom share system is a docking station for the G4 Platinum receiver enabling wireless transmission and glucose information such as the patient’s trend graph and alert notifications from the G4 Platinum to designated recipients, allowing the recipient to view the patient’s data on a smartphone. For example, a parent could receive their child’s glucose information during the nighttime while they sleep in another room, or during the school day while the parent is at work. It will also have non-pediatric applications such as for a spouse while at work or when traveling. We expect to file the DexCom Share System with the FDA in the third quarter of this year."

That's great news! Disappointing for me seeing as I just purchased the medtronic system, but happy for future CGM purchasers :)

Yay, no more trips across the border to get Dex supplies. Even the old 7+ is so much better than the medtronic garbage.

Hi Mike - Sorry for the delayed response here, but apparently Dexcom will be available in the fall here in Canada. I have yet to see a doctor in Canada since my move, but will be sure to post when I do! Let me know if anything changes on your front!

Hey Hey mike! thanks for checking in! I am going to be making some more posts here shortly. Now that football season (american!) has started, I am going to commit to posting a new blog on Sundays. Thanks for the motivation! I have been in conversation with the nurse at the endo I am going to see in a couple weeks about how to get supplies. Yes, I am a little worried that it wont make it on the extended medical insurance right away. Things seem to move a little slow up here? I have a number for the dexcom distributor (Animas) and am going to call next week and check in with my insurance company to see when it would be added to our insurance. We will see. thanks again!

Hey Mike - glad to see you back! I have been slacking a bit here on posts and seeing a Endo in Canada. I did see a Dr and got a referral for sometime in Sept. I really stocked up on supplies before I moved to Canada, so haven't really needed anything yet. Awesome you are seeing me on other sites, I should really do some more reading around other blogs. Life has been a bit crazy lately.

I just started looking into a new pump and am interested in switching from my Medronic one (that I have been wearing for 8 years) to an Animas but am curious about getting the combined Dexcom CGM/pump deal. By the sounds of this, we are still far from the approval of the combo in Canada? It seems crazy to me that Minimed had built in CGM approval in Canada 9 years ago and it's taking so long for another company to move into the market. Also, noticed you are in Kelowna, me too, small world isn't it?

Hi Miranda - Dexcom is still fairly a new company, but from the sounds of things (other reviews from users), much more preferable to Medtronic. I have only used Dexcom and am extremely happy, but just need to continue to work out the adhesiveness of the sensor. I am actually living in Vancouver, but we are still close. I have yet to do much exploring in Canada, but want to make it out that way soon. Thanks for the insight! 9/24/2013 09:38:20 pm
WOW this is fantastic news!! thanks for this article!!!

I just got off the phone with someone from Animas. She said that the coverage for the Animas Vibe got approval from Health Canada shortly after the Dexcom standalone system so they will be processing and releasing the technology that order. Super exciting!

Thanks Miranda for your post. After I read it I called Animas Canada also. So they told me the stand alone will be available in Mid novemberish. And the Animas Vibe Will be available sometime Jan/Feb 2014(no Promises)....BUT healthcare Canada said yes but BC Fair Pharmacare won't cover any part, and there is no word yet about Extended medical coverage's yet. She said that one extended medical wanted 3 years of blood sugars so their doctor could approve if the patient was a good candidate for the Animas Vibe or not?!?!?!?!??! REALLY How do we know if he has any diabetes Education and not some doctor that they paid for off the street?????? ANyways no word yet but will keep you guys updated

Mike/Miranda - I am so appreciative for your comments and I am sure others are as well. It seems to be quite the confusing topic when asking the doctors office to take a look. I have more accurate info from you guys! This is awesome and why I started this blog in the first place. Thanks for your help and for sharing!

I have been pumping for 8+ yrs but with changes to Alberta Health care now finally covering cost of pumps and supplies it has allowed me to explore new options for CGM to better my control.. I am a current Medtronic user (I have the 512 model a non CGM) but never used the CGM options as price was prohibitive and reviews were poor. I am actually thinking of switching to Ping pump for remote capabilities and waterproof feature.

Dexcom has been an awful company to work with. I have had terrible technical support. The products keep breaking and I have spent around 3 grand over the last 100 days (give or take) No fast response, rude, overworked employees and products that break often. I would highly suggest going with any other pump company. I also had three weeks with blood readings between 50-300% up or down of all other testing kits. I was told that it was impossible by an angry employee. Animas is great but they will not help if you do not have a pump with your dexcom. I would suggest not using any products made by Dexcom. I am hoping Animas can help me but if they can't I will be moving to Medtronics.

Sad day :( there is no coverage for me through extend medical or the government at this time. So looks as though I will still be on the pump alone:(:(:(:(
